Finding a Medicare Plan That’s Right for You

How do you choose a Medicare plan that works for you? How do you comparison-shop among all of the Medicare plan options that are available?

During Medicare Open Enrollment (October 15 – December 7th), you can sign up or switch to a Medicare plan of your choice.  You can sign up or change plans on the official government website which provides plenty of information including how to get drug coverage.

The Medicare website also features a Plan Finder Tool to help you find the Medicare Advantage Plans in your area that fit your needs and budget. Information about the 2019 Medicare Health Plans will be available in the Plan Finder Tool starting October 1st.

The Plan Finder Tool personalizes information on:

  • The total costs you would pay that year for your drugs
  • Your average out-of-pocket costs based on your general health condition
  • Details about available plans

The Plan Finder Tool starts by asking for your zip code and to complete a questionnaire. The questionnaire will ask about your Medicare status, the prescription medications you take (even the dosages and frequency), your preferred pharmacy, and offer filters to narrow your search such as:

  • Overall Star Rating
  • Lowest Monthly Premium
  • Plan Name
  • Lowest Estimated Annual Health and Drug Cost
  • Lowest Health Plan Deductible
  • Lowest Annual Drug Deductible
  • Drug Restrictions
  • Off Formulary Drugs
  • Lowest Remainder of the Year Retail Costs
  • Lowest Remainder of the Year Mail Order Costs

You’ll find the plans available and their coverage, costs, deductibles, copayments, maximum out-of-pocket spending limits, whether they cover dental, vision, hearing, and medications.

If that sounds like a ton of information, the Plan Finder Tool makes it easy to understand the estimated annual health and drug costs, premiums, deductibles, and an estimate of your co-payments for common medical needs based on your health status.

The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) can also help with your search. You can find local contacts by calling Medicare at 800-633-4227 or visit their website for more information.
